To a be good all-round OCR Racer, in my opinion, your training will include running, swimming, lifting weights, agility and endurance exercises. Through an endurance event, you will be running on rugged and often hilly terrain, running or swimming through water, whether it is streams, ditches, lakes, rivers or even the sea. You will be using upper body strength to climb over walls or pull yourself up ropes. You will be using grip strength for climbing ropes, swinging from monkey bars, or lifting heavy objects such as logs and sandbags.
The physical aspect of training is widely varied. Not only you get the best of cardiovascular exercise, but also you benefit from weight training. Having a good all-round level of fitness is important for anyone, regardless of being an OCR racer or not. If you are into fitness and love being outside, obstacle course racing is a great way to stay in shape!
You Will Develop Mental Toughness!
Whether you are doing your first obstacle course race or training for an ultra-endurance event, OCR events help you develop mental toughness. Jumping through a skip filled with 40 tonnes of ice requires mental strength and determination. Equally, running an endurance event into the darkest hours of the night can be intimidating. All these activities require mental strength. However, the person you become from these gruelling obstacles is highly beneficial for developing your character. All challenges can be overcome and defeated.
Every time an OCR Racer shows up to an event, they will battle through muddy terrain, sometimes face unfavourable weather conditions, and frequently overcome their fears. Metaphorically, an OCR event is their battleground, their place to work on themselves whether it is mentally or physically. As a result, these lessons they learn from doing a Tough Mudder, Spartan Race or any other type of race are often applied to other aspects of life. In other words, by overcoming challenges, you have the confidence to face different obstacles.
